Practical Techniques for Building the High School Marching Band

ISBN 978-1-4363-6827-8

While teaching Instrumental Methods at Tennessee State University, I discovered that the subject matter covered in most books did not give the most basic information on how to survive in the daily routine of the band program. While they discussed the necessary information for teaching fundamental skills and techniques on the various instruments, not much was addressed about those things that band directors that are starting a program from the beginning need to know. In searching sources, I was not able to find one that actually dealt with these issues. As I put together information on my own, I noticed that my students were carefully collecting each assignment that they were given back, and several years later, that they were continuing to use this information daily while on the job.

You just got a new job as a band director. The principal just shook your hand, and gave you the keys to the bandroom. What do you do now? Practical Techniques for Building the Modern Marching Band is for band directors that are new to the profession, are going into a band program that is new or must be rebuilt or just wants to improve their current program. The book is intended to be a practical source for directors, and covers topics that are not ordinarily covered in Music Education or Instrumental Methods class.

This book covers topics such as:

  • Philosophy and Vision

  • Designing Your Marching Band Program

  • The Five Most Important Relationships to Develop Within a School

  • Finding Your Personnel

  • Communication

  • Forming a Band Parent’s Organization

  • And many others!

The Effects of Participation In School Instrumental Music Programs On Student Achievement and School Attendace

UMI 3404569

This dissertation examines the effect of participation in an instrumental music program on standardized test scores and school attendance. It shows that standard test scores are higher for students that took band or orchestra in the year that they were tested. It also show that school attendance is higher for those students.
